Richard, a multifaceted entertainer from Saginaw, Michigan, has carved out an impressive space for himself in the New York performance scene. Having honed his skills in both vocal and instrumental music from a young age, Richard’s cultural influences span a wide range of genres like gospel, Motown, jazz, R&B, pop, rock, soul, and country. His innate talent and dedication to music were recognized when he won the top prize at the Apollo Theatre’s Amateur Night Competition in Harlem in 2007.
Armed with degrees in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University and Indiana University, Richard extended his talents beyond performance into production, creating shows with his band, Ricky B. & the Soul Patrol, at established NYC venues such as Feinstein’s/54 Below and The Triad Theatre. Simultaneously, Richard has made significant contributions to the field of musical direction and consultation, especially for new musicals and workshops. As an esteemed faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music, he continues to impart his knowledge and passion for music to aspiring performers.
His acting portfolio includes an ongoing role in Broadway’s improvisational hip-hop/comedy show, Freestyle Love Supreme, under the moniker Rich Midway. Other notable appearances include concerts alongside Ben Folds and George Benson, performances at the Bloomington Jazz Festival, IU Jazz Celebration, and Jazz @ Lincoln Center, among others.
As a pianist, Richard has showcased his talents in theatrical productions like “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “West Side Story,” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” He demonstrated his directorial proficiency during productions such as “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” and “Spring Awakening.”
