Meet the Musical Director – Spotlight on the Talented Women of Transcendence Theatre Company®
This summer, Transcendence Theatre Company® is turning up the volume with two powerhouse productions: Beautiful – The Carole King Musical and Ladies of Broadway. At the heart of both shows is the extraordinary musical direction of Sue Draus, a celebrated artist whose passion, talent, and heart have helped shape some of TTC’s most unforgettable performances. We caught up with Sue to talk about what makes this season so special, her favorite local spots in Sonoma, and why the magic of Transcendence keeps audiences—and artists—coming back year after year.
1. What makes you excited about bringing Beautiful – The Carole King Musical to Sonoma?
I love this show because it focuses on the art of songwriting, and there’s no one better than Carole King! She wrote one hit after another and when Tapestry was released, it changed people’s lives, especially women, especially mine. I served as musical director on the national tour for 4 years, so I know the show well. I’m particularly excited about this production because so many talented friends of mine are in it. It’s been quite the reunion!
2. What’s your favorite part about returning to Transcendence?
There’s something about being outside in wine country that enriches the music and gives more meaning to the lyrics. I also love how the look of the show changes as the sun goes down and the lights get more intense.
3. Tell us about bringing Ladies of Broadway back to Transcendence, and what is new this time?
Ladies of Broadway was my first Transcendence show and a favorite of mine and the Sonoma community, which is why they wanted to bring it back for another run. This rendition will be very similar in that there will be seven women, with Broadway credits, singing, dancing and telling their stories. This year we’ve extended the age range in both directions to enhance the storytelling, which will also influence some new song selections. And how do we celebrate the power of women on stage? By having seven powerful and fascinating women on stage, showing and telling you what drives them to be so strong and tenacious.
4. What’s one hidden gem that you always have to visit in Sonoma?
I love having dinner at Salt and Stone and I always visit Landmark for a tasting!
5. What makes the Transcendence community so special?
The people of Sonoma are so wonderful, inviting us into their homes, hosting pizza parties and pool parties, etc. And they are loyal fans, often seeing the show more than once. They’re our home away from home.
