With The Beat Goes On beginning in just a little over two weeks, Transcendence is excited to spotlight the show’s conceiver, director, and musical director: Susan Draus! Draus is celebrating her eighth show at Transcendence, her third as conceiver (Road Trip, Hooray for Hollywood, The Beat Goes On), and her first as director. Learn more about Susan’s journey with The Beat Goes On in her own words:
Q: What in your professional and personal journey led you to discovering Transcendence Theatre Company?
Years ago, I did the national tour of Mamma Mia with Carrie Manolakos and Tony Gonzalez. Both of them raved about their experience with Transcendence and recommended that I apply. Ten years later, I was touring with Eric Jackson on The Book Of Mormon and he asked me to apply for The Ladies of Broadway at Transcendence. The timing was right, the show seemed interesting to me and I knew that if Carrie, Tony and Eric loved it that much, then I would, too. This is now my 8th show here at TTC.
Q: What about the music of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s do you think helps them stand the test of time?
Good songwriting and a great melody. It’s remarkable how many different melodies and hooks the Beatles came up with in such a short amount of time. And then watching and listening to them continually create fresh and inspiring work – Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road…. It’s beyond comprehension. From the 70s, I’d choose Carole King, a monster songwriter and creator of one of the greatest albums ever, Tapestry. And from the 80s, no question – Prince. I love that every piece of every song is filled with hooks, from the melody to the bass line and the background vocals… I’m obsessed with every intro he ever wrote!
Q: What has been the most fun part of conceiving and directing The Beat Goes On?
The trip down memory lane. I was born in 1954, so these songs are in my heart and soul. It has been such a joy to introduce this incredible cast to the music I was raised on. I know that when they hear these songs in the future, they’ll think of their summer at Transcendence and the incredible music we got to experience together.
Q: Do you have anything that you’d like to tell our readers or let them know as they get ready to see the show?
Great music is magical for any age, so even if you’re not familiar with these songs, you will love them. And Boomers? This is your life!!!
We can’t wait to share the exciting work Susan and the whole cast and team of The Beat Goes On will bring to the beautiful Belos Cavalos Ranch stage!
